Manerva was the daughter of James and Loruhumah (Underwood) Rose. According to their family Bible, Manerva was born on January 15, 1837, and died on January 30, 1850.

In 1846, James Rose and his family left Trumbull County, Ohio, and settled in Wilmington Township, DeKalb County, Indiana. Later, in 1866, they moved to Mower County, Minnesota. It is possible that James Rose’s farm bordered that of William Crooks.

William Crooks was married to Nancy Rose, daughter of John Rose Jr., who arrived in Stafford Township, DeKalb County, Indiana in 1836. At that time, John Rose and William Crooks lived about half a mile from one another.
